September is just around the corner!

That's insane!

As I write this, I am holding on to the last vestiges of summer, but in actuality feeling as though yesterday was the beginning of fall!

In this month's September Citynotes I have included some art openings at galleries and museums as well as some new theater.

What I am MOST excited about are some diverse artists I came upon while going down the rabbit hole of research for this months email blast. I was very excited to find some extremely accessible artists in ceramics, painting, printmaking and more. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Within the ceramic artists there are two that I am a bit more intimate with. Freyja Lee is an artist I have loved for a long time. I was first exposed to her a while back, and then, on a recent trip with good friends to Estelle Manor in England, I was able to enjoy the many pieces the proprietors commissioned from Freyja. Her work is everywhere and a real joy to see! In addition Katie Spragg is an artist Keith and I found at a craft show in London about fifteen years ago. I own a piece that sits in my living room in New York and I adore her work.

ARP: HEADS OR TAILS

This Fall, Hauser & Wirth presents ‘Arp. Heads or Tails,’ the first New York exhibition in nearly fifteen years dedicated to the seminal German-French modernist. Organized by Curatorial Senior Director Alexis Lowry, this presentation takes Arp’s late Threshold sculptures as a point of departure, situating this pivotal but underexamined body of work within the trajectory of Arp’s long career of aesthetic and philosophical inquiry. The exhibition’s design takes inspiration from Arp’s studio in Clamart, France, and traces a line from his early cut-outs and reliefs to his mastery of form as a tool for reconfiguring and transforming our perception of space.

BRICE MARDEN: I AM A PLANE IMAGE

For those of you who don't know..... I have always ADORED Brice Marden! When the boys were quite young and our family was in Athens, we saw Brice and his wife at the hotel and I went right up to tell him I was obsessed with his art! It was quite a funny moment .

Am a Plane Image, is a comprehensive survey of paintings by Brice Marden at the West 21st Street gallery in New York. Presented in collaboration with the Estate of Brice Marden, this is the first such exhibition of the artist’s work in the city in twenty years. Spanning six decades, the presentation includes major institutional loans from the Art Institute of Chicago, Whitney Museum of American Art, and others, as well as significant works from the Estate and notable private collections. It offers a historic opportunity to view works that have rarely, if ever, been exhibited before.

TARYN SIMON: FATHER COUNTRY

Taryn Simon | Father Country I Do Love You is a major exhibition premiering a new body of work by artist Taryn Simon (b. 1975, New York). On view during the 250th anniversary of the United States, this presentation will bring together never-before-seen photographs, text, videos, and sculptures into a singular, interactive installation filling the entire rotunda. It will mark the first monographic exhibition by a photography-based artist in the rotunda and the largest debut of new work ever staged at the Guggenheim.

Nearly a decade in the making, Father Country I Do Love You (2026) traces the real life of one unnamed federal agent through 42 individual artworks. The immense project is a labyrinth of sagas in which Simon uncovers the ripple effects of her protagonist’s actions and inactions. Through duty, devotion, loss, and happenstance, the federal agent acted as a middleman, witnessing events great and small and collecting evidence for someone else to slot into the bigger picture. Everything he touched ricocheted to the outer boundaries of nations and lives he’d never know.

UGO RONDINONE : WATERFALL

The exhibition at Gladstone Gallery consists of twelve vertical sculptures ranging from 3.5 to 6 meters in height. Arranged in an irregular grid, they rise through the gallery like waterfalls suspended in the act of falling. Made from transparent resin infused with pigments derived from crushed gemstones, the sculptures hold light within themselves like condensed atmosphere. Embedded inside each work is also a handful of ashes from his own hair and fingernails, a trace of his body suspended within the flow of geological time.

ARTHUR JAFA :I AM TONY

Spanning two floors of the newly expanded New Museum, Arthur Jafa: I Am Tony encompasses the practice of one of the most influential artists of his generation. Alongside the premiere of new work, the exhibition will feature Jafa’s most celebrated works, including Love is the Message, The Message is Death (2016) and the Golden Lion-winning The White Album (2019), as well as recent paintings, large-scale video and film installations, and a range of sculptural and photographic objects.

I love the Galerie Sardine! Valentina is a beautiful soul and she has exquisite taste. This show is highlighting the suite of paintings was produced during the period in which Nystrup-Larsen's young son began to walk, recording his encounters with the landscape surrounding their home in rural Denmark alongside the artist's own sustained observation of it. Flowers, insects, fields, and other recurring forms enter the paintings as both subjects and records of place, with the child's process of encountering and differentiating the world running parallel to the artist's attention to his immediate environment.

ACCESSIBLE ARTISTS

DARCY McCRAE

Darcy McCrae

Darcy McCrae’s practice is deeply rooted in the landscape and environment. His expressive style combines a naïve aesthetic with bold compositions influenced by traditional painting, sculpture, and abstraction.

Darcy McCrae, born in 1989 in Mullumbimby, is a self-taught Australian artist who has established himself as a prominent figure in the realm of contemporary art. Currently based between the Northern Rivers and the Gulf of Carpentaria in Queensland . Drawing inspiration from traditional and contemporary painting, McCrae's creations reflect a vibrant and naive aesthetic that captivates viewers.

JOSEPHINE BIRCH

Josephine Birch

Josephine Birch pushes the boundaries between drawing and printmaking, creating space-sensitive, experimental works that envelop the viewer. Working primarily on location, she responds directly to her surroundings, allowing changing weather, wind, and rain to actively shape her art.

Based in Devon, Josephine holds both a BA and an MA from the Cambridge School of Art. She furthered her contemporary practice with a Postgraduate Scholarship from The Royal Drawing School, blending traditional techniques with experimental, site-specific installations.

EMMA LAWRENSON

Emma Lawrenson

Working from her Yorkshire studio, Emma’s practice is rooted in a sensitivity to landscape, memory, and the quiet rhythms of rural life. Her style utilizes muted tones and weathered surfaces to evoke a visual language of stillness, capturing the subtle shift of the seasons.

An award-winning British artist and Royal College of Art graduate, Emma was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Printmakers (ARE) in 2024. Her work has been exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and is held by the Royal Scottish Academy. She has also completed high-profile commissions for leading organisations including Faber & Faber, Netflix, and NBCUniversal.

KULBIR BHANDAL

Kulbir Bhandal

Kulbir Bhandal paints abstract landscapes that explore the complex cultural and physical search for place and belonging. Working with acrylics on canvas, her approach is one of distillation and dialogue, translating the natural world’s colors, textures, and forms into a refined visual language.

This focus stems directly from her biographical journey of traversing vastly different environments—having been born in rural India, raised in London, and now residing in rural England. Kulbir graduated from Camberwell College of Art, studying Fine Art and Art History, and initially worked in London as an art educator and mentor.

EMILIA DURKA

Emilia Durka

Emilia Durka is a Warsaw-based visual artist and landscape architect. Combining memory and careful observation, she captures fleeting impressions of ephemeral landscapes in a distinctive painterly style. Exploring place and memory, her artwork becomes a metaphor for human nature, reflecting her lived existence rather than a fixed location.

Informed by studies in Poland, Spain, and America, her nomadic lifestyle drives her to immerse herself in nature. Her training spans Landscape Architecture, Historical Gardens, Urban Space Studies, and Fashion.

Frejya Lee

Freyja Lee

I have admired Freyja for quite some time. This past May we were invited by friends to join them at Estelle Manor in England. Freyja had been commissioned to create elaborate wall installations for the Brasserie in the Manor. I couldn't stop admiring all that she had created. Freyja Lee specialises in ceramic slipware, transforming functional tableware and heirloom vessels into vibrant canvases for visual storytelling. Adorning her pieces with folklorish themes, dancing deities, and mythological narratives, her practice draws deep inspiration from dreams, poetry, and the visceral experience of motherhood.

Freyja works from a garden studio in the hills of North Wales, capturing creative moments amidst the beautiful chaos of family life.

LISA SANDNER

Lisa Sandner

Lisa Sandner is a self-taught artist and ceramicist based in Münster, Germany. Her pieces are not focused on seeking perfection but on catching the beauty in a trace from the past and imagining a story that could have been. Her work is born by chance.

Lisa was brought up in Africa and now travels the world to make new discoveries that inspire her creations. She studied art history at the Sorbonne in Paris. She is a self-taught ceramicist and follows an intuitive practice.

AMATA BENEDICT

Amata Benedict

Amata Benedict is an artistic partnership which creates art and interiors based on the principles of the Renaissance ‘bottega’ workshop. They make pieces from pre-existing things, often using fragments of used textiles, deconstructed and reconfigured furniture as well as fabricating metal sculptures and building with clay. Their works draw inspiration from ancient art to everyday contemporary household objects.

Amata studied Interior Design at the Glasgow School of Art, working at World of Interiors. Benedict studied sculpture at Central Saint Martins, later completing an apprenticeship in fabrication at Pangolin Editions. He went on to gain a Masters in Fine Art at City and Guild’s Art School.

KATIE SPRAGG

Katie Spragg

Katie Spragg's current work explores the relationship with nature; specifically the ways that humans and plants co-exist. She hopes to motivate an appreciation for the natural world.

Katie’s catalogue of work includes a piece purchased for the V&A Museum collection (2017), a permanent installation for the Garden Museum (2019) and commissions for the British Ceramics Biennale (2017) and Sotheby’s (2018) as well as numerous private collections and commissions.

Katie is a tutor at the Royal College of Art, a founding member of Collective Matter, an outreach group who pioneer collaborative practice through clay.

Faux is a new French-inspired, all-day restaurant and downstairs lounge in Tribeca opening on September 3, 2026, created by 23-year-old George McNally. He may seem young to be opening a restaurant, yet most men his age are not the son of Keith McNally, the man who made Balthazar and Minetta Tavern, to name only two; and they’re not the nephew of Brian McNally, Keith’s brother who created Indochine.

Oh, Mary! is a dark stage comedy written by Cole Escola that spoofs the lives of Mary Todd Lincoln and her husband, President Abraham Lincoln. Set in the days leading up to Lincoln’s assassination while watching a production of Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theatre, the 80-minute one-act play originally premiered Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in New York City with direction by Sam Pinkleton.
