Joesph Yoakum

MOMA
11 WEST 53 STREET, MANHATTAN MEMBER PREVIEWS, NOV 26–27

At age 71, artist Joseph E. Yoakum (1891–1972) began making landscape drawings of the places he had travelled to over the course of his life. “Wherever my mind led me, I would go,” he said. “I’ve been all over this world four times.”
Joseph E. Yoakum: What I Saw presents over 100 of Yoakum’s works. Drawn from memories, both real and imagined, his landscapes reveal a world no one has seen before or since: it is dense with swelling landforms, serpentine empty roads, and evergreen foliage, and almost always empty of people.

Nathaniel Mary Quinn Sept 17–October 30

GAGOSIAN
980 MADISON AVENUE NEW YORK, NY 10075

In his collage-like composite portraits derived from sources both personal and found, Nathaniel Mary Quinn probes the relationship between visual memory and perception. Fragments of images taken from online sources, fashion magazines, and family photographs come together to form hybrid faces and figures that are at once neo- Dada and adamantly realist, evoking the intimacy and intensity of a face-to-face encounter.

Gagosian is presenting NOT FAR FROM HOME; STILL FAR AWAY, an exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by Nathaniel Mary Quinn. This is his first exhibition with the gallery in New York.

Etel Adnan

GUGGENHEIM
OCTOBER 8, 2021–JANUARY 10, 2022
1071 FIFTH AVENUE NEW YORK, NY 10128

Over the course of a lifetime that spans almost a century, Etel Adnan’s creative and intellectual vision has taken many forms. In addition to being a visual artist, she is a renowned poet, a prominent journalist, and the author of one of the defining novels of the modern Arab world. Adnan’s biography is notable for its rich convergence of cultural influences. She was born in Beirut in 1925 to a Greek mother and Syrian father; grew up speaking French, Arabic, and Greek; and as an adult has lived for extended periods in Lebanon, the United States, and France. She began to paint in the late 1950s, while working as a professor of philosophy in Northern California. It was a period when, in protest of France’s colonial rule in Algeria, she renounced writing in French and declared that she would begin “painting in Arabic.”
