CITY NOTES
CURATED BY PATRICIA GREENE ISEN

November 2024

Welcome to November! I cannot believe we are at the end of 2024.That is completely shocking!

For this months CityNotes I have included some incredible Art Openings. I'm excited for Simone Leigh, Kara Walker, Richard Serra and Noah Davis. I have also included the newer buzzier O'Flahertys Gallery which has a new show opening November 7th.

I included two newer fun Inns in Litchfield, Connecticut. Could be fun for a winter weekend.

My big focus this month was the Thanksgiving table. I find that you all love to get ideas.....so needless to say, I couldn't just do one table...so I did TWO tables for you. A " casual " Thanksgiving table and a "dressier" Thanksgiving table. Truth be told they are probably both somewhat casual.I gravitate towards comfy and relaxed! I hope you enjoy some of these choices.

The last few years I have also always included great spots the city to pre order a Thanksgiving Pie. This year is no different. Make sure you get your orders in early enough.

We have a big week coming up.... Most importantly let's come from love, respect, honesty and integrity of each other. We are all one.

Please be safe!

Much Love to you & your families,

ENJOY!

These are great gifts, self purchases and of course.....a fantastic HOLIDAY GIFT.

ART

SIMONE LEIGH
MATHEW MARKS
522 West 22nd Street
Opening Thursday, November 7, 6–8 PM
through December 21, 2024

The exhibition, is Simone Leigh's first with the gallery which includes ten new sculptures in ceramic and bronze.

Over the past twenty years, Simone Leigh has created a multi-faceted body of work dedicated to her ongoing exploration of Black female-identified subjectivity. Leigh is best known for her sculptures that incorporate forms associated with African diasporic traditions.

Each of Leigh’s new sculptures presents an image of a partially abstracted female bod. The highly detailed surfaces of these works reference the repetition of handwork and unacknowledged acts of labor and care traditionally associated with women’s work.

KARA WALKER
In the Colorless Light of Day
SIKEMMA JENKINS
520 WEST 22ND STREET
October 25–December 14, 2024

Sikkema Jenkins & Co. and Kara Walker are pleased to present The High and Soft Laughter of the Nigger Wenches at Night, in the Colorless Light of Day. This solo exhibition features a new body of colored-watercolor and ink collages and works on paper, alongside a series of bronze busts.

A public opening reception with the artist will be held on Friday, October 25 from 6-8pm.

Through collage, drawing, sculpture, and installation, Kara Walker has consistently interrogated the legacy of American myth making as it manifests through systems of race, sexuality, and violence.

FRANCESCO CLEMENTE -SUMMER LOVE IN THE FALL
LEVY GORVY DAYAN
19 East 64th Street
OCTOBER 29 - DECEMBER 21, 2024

Summer Love in the Fall, is the Clemente's first exhibition at the gallery’s Beaux-Arts townhouse at 19 East 64th Street. Here, across multiple floors, Clemente will debut recent large-scale paintings in oil, watercolors, and frescoes, demonstrating his engagement with form and material—and melding artistic influences from India, West Africa, Egypt, and Italy to classical Greece and Rome. The subject of his new work is grounded in introspection and personal connection, echoing the expression penned by William Blake, “Love, the human form divine.”

NOAH DAVIS: ANCIENT REIGN
DAVID ZWIRNER
34 EAST 69TH STREET
Opening November 13, 2024

I adore Noah Davis! David Zwirner is presenting a selection of works on paper by Davis (1983–2015) the first exhibition to focus on this significant and generative area of his practice. Curated by Davis’s widow, the artist Karon Davis,( who i am also obsessed with and who has been in Citynotes multiple times) this intimate grouping of works will provide insight into the wide-ranging interests, influences, and ideas that equally informed his paintings and curatorial activities. There is a rarely seen artist’s book outlining Davis's vision for the Purple Garden at the Underground Museum, the experimental Los Angeles exhibition space that he and Karon founded together.

The exhibition coincides with the largest retrospective of Davis’s work to date, which is on view through January 5, 2025, at DAS MINSK, Potsdam, Germany. The retrospective will subsequently travel to the Barbican, London, and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. Davis’s work will also be on view in the group show Flight into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt, 1876–Now, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

O'FLAHERTYS GALLERY
NOVEMBER 7TH

This gallery is getting so much buzz. The show opens on November 7th. There is little written about it but it is sure to be a force based on the artists who are working together to create a joint show.

Artist and gardener Frances Palmer has been making ceramics since 1987 as an extension of her printmaking practice. Her coveted vessels are handmade in her studio, a Colonial Revival house in Weston, Connecticut.

The relief exterior shows the natural cracking of the clay during the drying process where the flowers meet. These natural, intentional cracks are only on the surface design and do not affect the integrity of the piece.
