Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

The Upper East Side is known for its liveliness and unique shops. If you’re looking for one-of-a-kind decorative objects, Creel & Gow is sure to have them. Their team has traveled the world searching for exotic items, such as coral, rare minerals, and even unusual taxidermy.

Another spot that offers unique home décor is KRB; this is the store to visit if you’re looking for vintage furniture or antiques. Blue Tree, opened in 2005 by Phoebe Cates Kline, has an eclectic selection of women’s clothing, jewelry, fragrances, music, and more.

There are a handful of beloved neighborhood spots serving up the best Italian food around. Elio’s is a classic family-oriented restaurant that specializes in traditional Italian dishes. Sette Mezzo is known for its friendly atmosphere and homemade pasta sauces with simple, fresh ingredients.

Sant Ambroeus serves Milanese cuisine and has a large pastry counter with fresh espresso. Hands-down, this is the place to stop for a coffee in the morning. Three Guys Restaurant is an all-day coffee shop with classic American fare, like omelets and burgers.

For an after-dinner drink, visit Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle Hotel. The lounge is surrounded by murals by Ludwig Bemelmans, the creator of the Madeline storybooks. Here, you’ll enjoy a nice cocktail while listening to the pianist.

Things to Do

The Upper East Side is home to the famous Museum Mile. A few of the most prominent are the Met and Guggenheim. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, commonly referred to as “the Met,” is the largest art museum in the Western Hemisphere. It has more than two million works in its permanent collection.

The Guggenheim building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and is a work of art. In addition to an extensive permanent collection, this museum always has new exhibits, lectures, film screenings, and classes to explore. If design interests you, either historical or modern, then you will love Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. It has over 215,000 objects spanning 30 centuries, including ancient textiles and the latest technologies.

If you’re looking for a breath of nature amid the big city, you’ll want to stroll through Central Park, the fifth largest park in the world. In addition to acres of green space, you’ll find playgrounds, picnic areas, ice skating rinks, and many bodies of water. There is even a castle to explore. Central Park is the prime location for concerts and annual festivals in New York City, and it is also home to the exciting Central Park Zoo. Spend an afternoon boating on Central Park Lake, from which you can also admire the Bethesda Fountain, one of the largest fountains in the city. If you’re in the mood to walk, why not go looking for the Alice in Wonderland or Balto statues located in the park?
